Weekending...3 days late

From the City...
Where to start, where to start.  So much seems to be taking place around here these days.  Being back at work has thrown a wrench into our life right now.  Theo has made the transition pretty flawlessly and seems to be really benefiting from his Pa time, I guess you can say it's the mama in the equation who's having the harder time adjusting.
Which bring us to our first pic, our green heart to heart sling which saved us when Theo was brand new and again seems to be making a comeback.  We do lots of babywearing right now.
Since the library just reopened, we've been having some good playtime there on my morning off.  you can guarantee some new friends will come along, some good stacks of books to pull from the shelves and some new magazines for the mama to get caught up on.
We also had some family visits on the weekend with our Deedee (grandma), aunties and uncles and some serious plays with cousin Finn and Everly.

weekending

From the City..
A nice weekend here in the city.
Mouth watering ribs slow cooked all day in the crock pot and then barbecued for 10 minutes with some homemade sauce.
We bought Theo a ball and he literally carried it around all day including when we went for a walk where he insisted on taking it in his stroller and holding it the whole time.
The new rice dish Simon and I are addicted to.  From this cookbook.
We had some mean card games when our friend Andrew visited.
cold beer, enough said.

Weekending

From the City...
Well what was supposed to be a weekend of first birthday partying ended up being a weekend of recovering from pink eye.  Yep, you heard it, we ended up cancelling the party due to a nasty case of yet another childhood illness.  We seem to be getting hit with illness after illness these days but I am oh so hopeful that the new warm weather will also bring the end of sickness.
A mama can dream, can't she?
Every sunday we have pancakes.  We look forward to them all week. These ones were delicious.
I got these amazingly beautiful and delicious purple potatoes from the warehouse at work.
We roasted them in oil and salt for 30 minutes and they were lovely.
Mother Dumplings for our weekend dinner out.
They were good but definitely not better than our stand by restaurant, Dumpling House.
I was cleaning out a box of junk in our kitchen and I came across these funny passport pics of Theo.
Laura and the kiddos were in town for a short little visit with cousin Theo.
We made sure to keep 'em good and separated.

...weekending

From the City...
Both Theo and I were sick with colds this weekend so we kept it pretty low key.  We've got a big birthday weekend coming up and we both need to be in fighting shape for it.
Here's some pics from our snot and cough filled weekend here in Toronto.
The birthday party lists have officially begun including both the menu and the things to do.  We're keeping the menu pretty simple;
Finger sandwiches (egg salad, cucumber with sprouts, bologna with cheese (I know, bologna??? but it makes Simon think of his childhood so we're making some exceptions)
Veggie tray with hummus and yogurt dip
Fruit tray
Cheese and crackers
Chocolate cake with Ice cream

I have to work this week so poor Simon has A LOT of work ahead of him.
We had chicken soup, recipe here.  I left out the food colouring which seemed odd to me but definitely kept the roux, it made all the difference.  But really, when doesn't butter make the difference?
I also made this carrot soup which we all loved.  We used coconut milk because we both have colds so we're laying off dairy but you could definitely use cow's milk or soy or almond, whichever you prefer.
  • ·       1 tbsp butter
  • ·       2 onions
  • ·       1 ¼ lb carrots (about 10)
  • ·       1 sweet potato, peeled and coarsely chopped
  • ·       4 cups Stock or water
  • ·       1 tsp ground cumin
  • ·       ½ tsp salt
  • ·       ½ tsp pepper
  • ·       ½ cup coconut milk
  • ·       chopped cilantro for garnish
In saucepan, heat butter over medium heat; cook onions, stirring often, for about 5 minutes or until softened. Add carrots, sweet potato, stock, cumin, salt and pepper; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium; cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
Puree in food processor or blender until smooth. Blend in coconut milk. Return to pan and reheat. Serve with cilantro.
Copious amounts of hot tea, homemade mcmuffins and walks with the boys.
Now, let the week begin.

our weekending (in pics)...

From the City...
This weekend consisted of,
major scores at both the goodwill and the sally ann
catching up on the good stuff (sleep)
A trip to the butcher shop (we got bacon, a big old 6lb chicken, pork chops and ground turkey)
Theo's new discoveries, the first being that parquet flooring is actually just one giant puzzle, that toilet paper rolls are hilarious to pull on and that toilet bowls are full of water which you can dip your hands in.

Weekending

From the City...
Well lucky for us here in Ontario (as well as in Alberta and Saskatchewan) because we got a whole extra day of weekending, known as family day.  I'm all about the made up holidays so this one was met with arms wide open.  For starters it was warm and sunny here in Toronto so a big walk was in order followed by some diaper washing, baking and some dinner preparation; minestrone soup with tea biscuits, hummus, Laura's preserved eggplant and cheese.
Simple and gooooooood.
Here's some pics from our weekend in the city.
Laura brought me some of her sprouts which we've been living off of.  This is pretty much what we ate all weekend.  Sprout and avocado sandwichs with carrot and sprout salad.
I went to a sold out Strumbellas Show.  It was fantastic.  The place was packed, so packed you could hardly dance, but don't worry, we still managed to.
As of tomorrow you can officially buy the album here.  How good is that????
Theo and Ruby Love.
I worked on my quilt.  More details if I ever get the damn thing finished.
Oh me, Oh my.  Recipe here. I added cheese and scallions.
Big walks around U of T.  Simon just loves stopping and taking pics.

Weekending...

From the City...
It was pretty chilly here this weekend.
The sun was out though so we made the most of it and tried to get out as much as possible.
Here's some pics.
Simon's band was asked to do a Leonard Cohen cover for this blog.  So our apartment turned into a little recording studio.  Theo loved it.  I swear if you listen to the recording close enough you can hear his little excited squeals throughout.  They did the song So long, Marianne.  It sounds phenomenal.
We at our first bunch of sprouts and they tasted amazing! Holy man.  I won't even lie, they stepped up our sandwiches significantly.  I have three more jars on the go right now as I type.
Our next venture will be doing the pea shoots in soil.  See here for a tutorial.
I got a long overdue haircut.  It was bad over here guys.  Post pregnancy my hair has been a nightmare.  Dry, dead ends, handfuls of hair falling right out, so I had to take some drastic measures.  I coughed up (oh man) $50.00 and got a real hair cut (that was including tax and tip).  It feels way better and I'm enjoying having bangs for the time being.
They are a bit of work though so we'll see how long I keep it up.
Theo and his cousin Finn had a pancake breakfast and spent the whole day playing with each other.
Simon surprised me with the earrings i've been pining away for!  I found them on pinterest and have had their picture on my desktop for months.  It was a bit of a crap week so getting these earrings on Friday totally brightened my day.
Shesh, that guy's a catch.
The hands down best (early) birthday present ever.
They are made of hammered silver that is then plated in gold.  I've never really owned something so special.  Here's a link to Irith's shop so you can take a peek for yourself, just try not to look at the pricetag.
I made Laura's muffins.  I've made them twice now and I must admit, they're pretty stand up.  For something that doesn't have butter in it, I was more than surprised.  Theo and Simon love them too.  Last time I stuck to the recipe but this time I added 1 cup brown bananas and 1/2 cup milk instead of the buttermilk called for.  I also used coconut oil instead of canola.
