Enough Food to Feed a...seven piece folk band?

From the City...

Simon's band, The Strumbellas, is in the studio this week recording their first full length album.  It's a pretty exciting time and one that we've been waiting for what feels like forever.  In celebration, us wives headed to the studio to cook up a storm for the hard working musicians.  The menu; burritos (recipe here), chips and salsa, donuts and fresh Loukoumades from Athens Bakery on the Danforth.  

Yes that is 20 large burritos.

Good Egg in Kensington Market.  Combining my two favourite things, meat and crafting.

We stopped at Tortilleria in Kensington Market for Lunch.  Best tacos in the city.

My new tea cup courtesy of the a very generous person who no longer wanted it and left in the lobby in our apartment building.  In my lobby, everyday, people leave the things they no longer want.  I was lucky one time to score an incredible vintage toaster, countless books and stacks of Toronto Life Magazines!!!  Also in the pic is my favourite tea pot from my sister in law and left over Loukoumades my husband so graciously scored for me.  

What I did on Wednesday

From the City...

We got home yesterday and had a major day of unpacking, organizing, diaper washing, plant watering, grocery shopping, farmers marketing, corn freezing, banana bread baking, cooking and having dinner with our good friend Andrew.    

We picked up three dozen corn from a farm on the way to the city and spent the day cooking it off and freezing it for the winter.

We also decided to whip these little suckers up for our vegetarian friend Andrew for dinner.  We served them with maple syrup and they were delicious. Recipe courtesy of The JOy of Cooking.

 These heirloom tomatoes I bought from the Bloor borden farmers market.  It was a pretty big basket for $10 as you can see.  We made a tomato basil salad with goat cheese and we're going to have pasta tonight as well as tomato sammy's for lunch.

 So worth the $10.

Wahoo!! Sime's band the Strumbies were featured on Degrassi last night.  The best, quite frankly.

Miriam and Neil's Wedding

From the country...

So it is not everyday that this country bumpkin makes her way to a fancy wedding in the city... and this one was super special! The August 1st night was beautiful, cool with a light breeze, where we celebrated Miriam and Neil's nuptials with 250 of their closest friends and family. The event was held at the Evergreen Brickworks, which is a pretty exceptional place and the music of the Strumbellas filled the air with their rich folky sound.

And the food, oh my goodness, a true test to all that is local and in season in Ontario made by some of Toronto's best chefs! There was rotisserie lamb from Metheral Farm, grilled chicken from Kawartha Ecological Growers, Fresh Fish from Akiwenzie's Fish, handmade stuffed agnolotti, fresh greens, potato salad, roasted beet salad, and a maple chiffon wedding cake amongst a table of after dinner sweets.Amuse Bouche: a beautiful pickle tray, Monforte cheese gold, mortadella, bresaula, cured duck breast

Finally the home to farm fair!

From the City...

Well two weeks ago now (shesh, slacking on the blogging) Laura and I helped in the kids room at Slow Food's annual Farm to Home Fair. It was another great slow food event with lots of good food, people and information for those interested in supporting local.

We also used the event as an opportunity to promote our blog by handing out little bags of goodies including basil seedlings and seed potatoes.

...a little fun in the kid's room! I didn't manage to get a good pic of it but Laura and I had brought in a couple bags of soil, some shovels, toy tractors, assorted plastic pigs and cows and a handful of beans and potatoes for the kids to 'plant'. It was pretty fun.

...Our friends from KEG were also there doing a maple syrup tasting as well as giving information on their very popular (rated number 1 by Toronto Life Readers 2009) CSA box, which Simon and I are so excited to be taking part in this summer!

All in all it was a pretty great way to spend a Saturday right here in the city...
